A lot of people who play HUSNG's totally under-estimate how note taking can help their game. Identifying an opponent and his tendencies in a HUSNG match is a huge part of becoming a winning player. There are a ton of tools available to help you in your note taking and if you are not taking advantage of them then you are putting yourself at a huge dis-advantage because your opponent just might be.
There are simple things that you can do such as color coding your opponents and there is also a lot of in-depth note taking that you should definitely get yourself in the habit of making the effort to try and do.
In the following article I hope to outline what I consider to be the most important notes to take and how they can be used most effectively to consistently crush your opponents.
Player Category
Not all players fit into a specific category, however a lot do. You should be able to classify most opponents within the first 10-15 hands. If you can't then make a note of that also.("Can't classify opponent but he seems to be Laggish")
More information on classifying your opponents in HUSNG's can be found in the following article HUSNG Player Types.
Statistics
There is some good software available to help you in this area. Basically you can easily find out whether your opponent is a huge winner, a huge loser or somewhere in between. A lot of people use Sharkscope but my preference is for Tournament Shark as it comes with a built in hud. Sharkscope has a hud but you have to pay extra for it. It is a huge help if you know how good your opponent is and hence get a handle on how he thinks.
3 betting
Does he 3 bet a lot, sometimes, never?
Make a note. If you have a note that he never , ever 3 bets and he suddenly does then you know what to do.(hint: fold unless you have a monster) Conversely if he 3bets a ton you need to think about how to adjust to that.
Is he positionally aware?
Does he call a lot OOP?
Does he limp every hand?
Some players do not understand that playing a hand in position is way preferable to playing a hand out of position. If you find a player who has no idea of how important position is, then take a note. This is a huge leak that you can easily explote in future matches.
Fit or Fold?
If your opponent is calling a lot of raises from the big blind and then giving up on flops then he is what is commonly known as a "fit or fold" type player. Ie: he will call if he hits the flop or fold if he misses. Take a note. C-bet him all day and shut down if he calls or raises.
How do they play their draws?
Take note of how your opponent plays his draws. A hugely valuable piece of information.
Key hands/Weird hands
It is good to take note of any interesting hands that happen and record briefly how they went down.
ie: Called down 3 streets with 3rd pair, check/shoved river with air, etc, etc..........
Miscellaneous
The list for misc is endless but basically anytime your opponent does something that is unexpected. Take a note.
Make up a template
I was playing online poker for a long time before it suddenly dawned on me that you can cut and paste into player notes.
So I then made up some templates for various different games that I could just cut and paste straight in to my notes to make it easier to take notes.
An example of a template I use sometimes.
